Business Challenge
  • The client's Assembly Line Control System relied on an existing integration subsystem to transport data to and from other manufacturing systems. The subsystem interfaced with 11 internal systems across 60+ data feeds, using four transport mechanisms including MQFT, MFT, FTP, and WebSphere MQ. As usage spread across the region, multiple issues emerged: multiple versions of the subsystem, difficulty in configuration and setup, limited support documentation, and limited or non-existent test support. The objective was to build a stable, reliable, easier-to-test integration platform while maintaining backward compatibility with existing data feed formats.
Our Solution
  • Implemented each data feed handler as an Apache Camel route hosted on Red Hat JBoss Fuse 6.3 — all existing integration points analysed and converted to microservices
  • Open-source Quartz scheduler integrated for scheduled activities; JAAS authentication (DB and LDAP) implemented for security
  • Web console built for configuring and testing Camel routes, managing schedules, and troubleshooting failures
  • Platform extended to include events from other manufacturing systems with no coding changes required for connected systems
Key Results
  • 11 internal systems and 60+ data feeds unified on a standard integration platform
  • No impact to connected systems — full backward compatibility maintained
  • Microservices architecture enabling independent, scalable data feed handling
  • User-friendly web console for configuration, testing, and troubleshooting
  • Cloud-compatible, highly reliable and extensible platform for future manufacturing systems
The story so far

From fragmented subsystems to a unified, extensible manufacturing integration platform.

A leading manufacturing company partnered with Kumaran to replace its fragile Assembly Line integration subsystem with a stable, cloud-compatible platform built on Apache Camel and Red Hat JBoss Fuse 6.3. The engagement converted 11 internal system interfaces and 60+ data feeds into microservices, introduced REST and ActiveMQ-based consumption patterns, and delivered a web console for full operational control — all without requiring any changes to connected systems. The result was a standard, extensible integration platform capable of supporting the continued growth of manufacturing operations across the region.

The Background

The client's Assembly Line Control System had grown organically across the region, and its integration subsystem — handling data exchange with 11 internal systems via 60+ feeds across four transport mechanisms — had become difficult to manage. Multiple versions of the subsystem existed in parallel, setup and configuration were complex, documentation was sparse, and test support was almost non-existent. The need for a modern, reliable, and maintainable integration platform — one that could grow with the business without disrupting existing systems — was clear.
